When it comes to alcohol, size does matter. Find the right mix for you
Alcohol is widely used and enjoyed by many Australians as part of our culture, tradition and celebrations. For some veterans, it was part of their military experience. For most veterans who drink at low-risk levels, alcohol is just part of the mix in a healthy lifestyle that includes good diet and exercise.
However, alcohol can have harmful effects on your health - especially if you drink at risky or high-risk levels. DVA's Alcohol Management Project aims to help veterans and their families work out if they've got the mix right for them.
The Project is working in partnership with ex-service and veteran community organisations. David Morton the Director of the Alcohol Management Project says "We're looking at the best ways to encourage veterans and their families to think about their drinking through a range of health promotion materials and information. We are also working with health providers to ensure the quality and effectiveness of alcohol related programs".
What's the right mix for you?
A healthy mix is a combination of good diet, regular exercise and low-risk drinking. On any one occasion men should have no more than 6 standard drinks and women should have no more than 4 standard drinks. It is also a good idea to have 2 alcohol free days per week.
